1. For families, swimmers, and beach-first travellers who want clear water and easy facilities — not those seeking wild or remote coast. Fig Tree Beach suits visitors who prioritise water quality, safe shallow swimming, and reliable Mediterranean infrastructure. Skip it if you want truly undeveloped coastline or genuine solitude — Protaras is a developed resort area and Fig Tree is its best-known beach. The appeal is clarity and ease, not wilderness.

2. May, June, September, and October for the best balance. Avoid July and August if crowds matter. July and August are peak: very hot (35°C+), crowded, and expensive. May and June offer warm water, lighter crowds, and lower accommodation prices. September and October are often the sweet spot — water stays warm from summer heat, air cools slightly, and the beach thins noticeably after school holidays end. November to April is possible with good weather but too cool for comfortable swimming.

3. Fly to Larnaca (LCA) — it is closer to Protaras than Paphos. Larnaca International Airport is served by most European carriers and low-cost airlines. From Larnaca, Protaras is about 40–50 minutes by rental car or taxi. Paphos Airport (PFO) is an alternative but around 90 minutes further west. Rental cars give the most flexibility; taxis and buses also connect Larnaca to Protaras. Cyprus uses the euro and drives on the left. EU and UK passport holders do not need a visa for the Republic of Cyprus.

4. Two to three days is enough for Fig Tree Beach; four to five suits those wanting day trips. The beach rewards a longer stay for pure relaxation, but sightseeing within walking distance of Protaras is limited beyond Cape Greco. For a fuller Cyprus trip, combine Fig Tree Beach with Paphos (Roman mosaics, Tombs of the Kings), Limassol’s old town, or Nicosia’s divided city — each adds a distinct dimension to what is otherwise a beach-only itinerary.

5. Stay in Protaras itself for beach proximity; Ayia Napa for more evening options. Protaras has a quieter, more family-oriented atmosphere and puts you within walking distance of Fig Tree Beach. Ayia Napa, 10 minutes south, has a larger restaurant and nightlife scene and is a natural alternative base. If morning beach access and quiet evenings matter most, Protaras is the right choice. If you want evenings out as well as beach days, Ayia Napa works better.

6. Cyprus is mid-range for Mediterranean beach destinations — shoulder months offer good value. Hotels in Protaras range from budget apartments to sea-view mid-range hotels. A reasonable 3-star option in May or September runs €60–120 per night; July and August prices can nearly double for the same room. Food and drink at resort restaurants is moderately priced by Western European standards. Budget roughly €100–150 per person per day for accommodation, meals, and beach hire in shoulder season.

7. No visa for EU and UK passport holders — but check current entry rules before travelling. Cyprus is an EU member state; EU passport holders travel freely. UK passport holders currently enter for 90 days without a visa, but check the UK FCDO Cyprus travel advice before travelling as EU entry rules may change. The US State Dept rates Cyprus as Level 1: normal precautions. Note that Protaras is in the Republic of Cyprus (southern part); the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has a different legal status.

8. Arrive before 10am for calmer water, better sand positions, and cooler temperatures. Fig Tree Beach gets busy by late morning in peak season. Morning arrivals get the flattest water, best lounger positions, and low-angle light before the mid-morning sun blanches out the colour. Bring reef-safe sunscreen — the water clarity is one of the beach’s main features and standard chemical sunscreens damage marine environments.

9. Cape Greco National Forest Park is an easy half-day extension from the beach. Cape Greco, 5 km south of Protaras, has sea caves (Kamara tou Koraka, accessible at low tide), short coastal walking trails, and a lighthouse. The view back up the coast shows the bay in context. Trails are well-marked and easy. It is the best non-beach option on the peninsula and takes about half a day to explore properly.

10. Nicosia is one of Europe’s most distinctive day-trip options — the last divided capital city in the world. Nicosia (Lefkosia) is split between Greek Cypriot south and Turkish Cypriot north, with the UN-patrolled Green Line running through the old city. Crossing on foot at the Ledra Street checkpoint is legal and straightforward for most passports.
